Why Do Male Cats Have Spikes on Their Willies?

February 14, 2024

When a male cat wants to mate, those little spines that look like spikes on the penis come out for only one purpose: mating. The spines are a fascinating chapter in the bizarre world of feline anatomy. But why do male cats have these sharp, backward-facing spikes on their willies? Read on to find out!

The cat penis is made up of the testicles, the epididymis, and the urethra. The testicles produce sperm and testosterone, the male hormone that gives cats their manly characteristics. The epididymis is a coiled tube that stores the sperm until they’re ready to be released through the penis during sexual activity. The urethra is a tube that carries both urine and semen from the body to the outside world.

A male cat’s genitals are covered with tiny spines that resemble scales, and they become more prominent as the cat reaches puberty and sexual maturity. The spines may improve sexual stimulation for the male cat or prevent the penis from slipping out of the female’s vagina during ejaculation. The spines also may be used to induce ovulation in the female cat during sexual intercourse, which helps ensure that sperm is deposited and that the cat is impregnated.

Unfortunately, the spines cause pain during sex for the female cat. In fact, she will usually whine during the process. This is because the spines scrape the walls of her vulva, which causes her to ovulate so that she can be impregnated. This painful process explains why the spines only emerge during mating and then retract immediately afterward. Cats that are spayed early won’t develop spines because they will have low levels of androgens, the male hormones that stimulate the growth of the spines.
