The City of Clinton is located in the northeast portion of Anderson County along the Clinch River and borders Norris Dam. It is a mid-sized city with a small town feel. It is the seat of Anderson County and is home to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The city offers a wide range of recreation facilities, including a Jaycee Park with five baseball/softball fields, an outdoor swimming pool, six tennis courts, and a basketball court. The Museum of Appalachia, which features 36 authentic mountain farm/village exhibit buildings, gardens surrounded by split rail fences and a variety of authentic Appalachian artifacts, is located in Clinton.

The city was founded in 1802 and was originally named Burrville after Aaron Burr, a one-term Vice President under Thomas Jefferson. The name was renamed in 1809 after the defeat of Burr in his unsuccessful attempt to become governor of New York. The City of Clinton was the host of the Clinton Engineer Works, a World War II Manhattan Project facility that produced enriched uranium for use in the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The city is also the birthplace of Alex Haley, author of Roots: The Saga of an American Family and other notable works.
