The town is located in Granville County, North Carolina and has a population of 8,295 residents. The town has a suburban rural mix and most residents own their homes. One of Butner’s biggest attractions is the Federal Medical Center at Butner, a complex of low- and medium-security prisons with a medical facility. The facility has an excellent reputation and has treated inmates with everything from minor ailments to serious diseases. One of its most famous inmates was Ted Kazcynski, the Unabomber. The medical facility even made it into popular culture when Saul Goodman from the Breaking Bad spinoff series “Better Call Saul” visited Butner Federal Medical Center in the show’s final episode.
The town has a number of businesses and industries, with several manufacturing plants and distribution centers. Newton Instrument is the largest employer in the town and produces telecommunication equipment components. Another major business is Carolina Sunrock, which operates the only pure trap rock quarry in the Southeast. Founded in 1949, the company is still family-owned. Other local employers include Butner-Creedmoor, Duke, and Granville Primary Care health centers.
