Where Do Stray Cats Sleep?

December 30, 2023

A common sight in many neighborhoods, stray cats are often seen snoozing on the streets at night. They are active during the day, so the darkness of the night allows them to rest and recoup their energy. They are also less visible to larger predators who may be lurking nearby.

Cats love privacy and are highly self-conscious, so they prefer to sleep somewhere that feels safe and private. They will look for a spot that is sheltered and hidden from all angles so that they can be sure that no one is around. They are also keen on a sense of security and will usually pick a place that is high up where they can survey their territory and ensure they are not being approached by any predators.

During the cold winter months, strays and feral cats need to seek out places that will protect them from freezing temperatures. If they are unable to find a warm and dry shelter, they are more likely to suffer from frostbite and hypothermia.

Many outdoor cats will take up residence under porches or tucked in an abandoned shed, barn, garage, or other open building. These locations will offer protection from the elements, and many cats are also known to sleep on a secluded bench or crawl space. They will also seek out elevated spots like atop furniture or shelves to keep an eye on their surroundings without being vulnerable.
