Where Do People Sleep at Burning Man?

November 25, 2023

Many people bring tents. They are cheap, quick to assemble and are ideal for sleeping at Burning Man as the event is so huge and it takes hours to travel from your camp to the outer limits of Black Rock City (the "deep playa" where all the jaw-dropping art installations reside). Showers are few and far between in this desert environment, and dust can be extremely abrasive on skin, so it's wise to wear lots of chapstick, eyedrops and salve to remedy dry eyes and cuticles. You should also bring closed-toe shoes -- bare feet on the Playa can lead to painful "playa foot" rashes.

Some people also bring RVs and yurts. The arid environment is harsh and the sun moves quickly, so it's important to have shade for your tent as well. The sand at the playa isn't the same as what you find on a beach, it's more like coarse talcum powder and extremely alkaline, so it sticks to everything and gets into every crack and crevice.

There are also some "fancy camps" at Burning Man where people pay for luxurious accommodations. Business Insider was able to tour one of them back in 2015 and it was a sight to behold. It had everything from a reception area to living room-like gathering tents, chandeliers, and even a private chef for those staying in the camp. Interestingly, the camp's clients included some of the top tech titans like Elon Musk and Sergei Brin along with actress Susan Sarandon.
