Where Do Babies Sleep Outside?

December 29, 2023

Imagine heading to your favorite cafe and spotting a group of babies sleeping peacefully in strollers on the sidewalk. It may shock you, but to parents in Denmark and other Nordic countries this is a normal (and healthy) practice.

Infants who sleep outside often have regular daytime nap routines, allowing parents to better schedule their day. And according to Thorough research conducted by Marjo Tourula, an associate professor of health sciences at the University of Oulu in Finland, frigid naps increase the length of a baby's daytime sleep.

Babies who sleep outdoors also experience a variety of sensory stimuli — from the warmth of the sun to the sound of chirping birds and rustling leaves. Ultimately, this helps to boost a baby's cognitive, motor, and language development.

A 2004 study found that when infants are exposed to natural light during the day, they establish melatonin rhythms more rapidly at night, allowing them to fall and stay asleep longer. In addition, a stroller with a large sunshade like the Elodie Mondo provides your little one with adequate protection from the sun and other harmful UV rays.

Whether you're a new parent or you've been a parent for a while, we all want our children to be happy and healthy. And while we may be tempted to use jackhammers in our home, most experts agree that leaving your baby outside for an extended period of time isn't safe.
