Despite our world-class outdoor activities, Asheville is also home to many great things to do inside on a rainy day. There are plenty of creative spots to paint pottery or create candles, and many places that will offer a relaxing foot soak or a massage in the event you feel like getting pampered before resuming your plans.
If you love books, Asheville has a number of literary hotspots to visit. One of our favorites is The Thomas Wolfe Memorial, where you can go inside Julia Elizabeth Westall Wolfe's (Wolfe's mother) former boarding house on Market Street. It's a fun place to see the inspiration behind "Look Homeward, Angel," which was based on her life in Asheville.
The Grove Arcade and Battery Park Book Exchange are both excellent AVL bookstores. They both hold author events and feature a newsletter that lists new releases, indie reads and more.
Downtown Asheville features a dozen art galleries each unique in their own way, so there's something for everyone. Take a stroll through each, stopping at each booth for a chat with the gallery staff.
A growing collection of Asheville museums will help you explore science, art and music. From the Asheville Museum of Science to the Moogseum and the new Asheville Art Museum, you'll be amazed at what this city has to offer.
A rainy day is the perfect time to sample the local brews. Asheville has some of the best craft breweries in the country, so make sure to stop by a few during your stay.
