What NFL Stadiums Have Domes?

February 15, 2024

There are a lot of factors that go into building an NFL stadium. Teams need to consider seating capacity, field surface, layout, and more. But another important factor is whether the stadium will be indoors or outdoor. The answer to that question will have a big impact on how fans experience games, and how easy it is for players to make mistakes. Fortunately, the NFL has some incredible stadiums with domes that can keep the game going even when it’s raining or snowing outside.

There are currently 10 dome/indoor stadiums in the NFL. Some of these stadiums have retractable roofs, while others are permanent. The oldest of these stadiums is the Houston Astrodome, which was built in 1984 and was the first multi-purpose dome. It is now home to the New Orleans Saints and has seen some legendary events, such as Muhammad Ali beating Leon Spinks in one of the most famous fights in sports history.

Among the current NFL stadiums with domes are the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, Georgia Dome, Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, and the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. There are four more stadiums with fixed roof domes (Lions, Falcons, and Vikings) and four with retractable roofs (Cowboys, Texans, Colts, and Cardinals). The new Hollywood Park for the Rams/Chargers and Allegiant Stadium for the Raiders will also have domes when they are completed in 2020.
