What Does Milk Taste Like?

February 14, 2024

Milk is a nutritious staple for babies and adults. It has a lot of important vitamins and minerals, including the protein-building amino acids whey and casein. Milk also contains a protein fragment called casomorphin that sends a signal to the brain that makes you feel comforted. It's no wonder that babies love it so much!

Adults who have tasted breast milk say it tastes sweet and creamy, similar to cow's milk. But the exact flavor varies from person to person. This may be because the nutrient composition of breast milk changes with each feeding session and from day to day. The fat content, for example, tends to increase as the feeding session progresses. The taste may also be affected by what you eat, as foods can pass into the mother's milk. Some foods that have been known to affect the taste of breast milk include caraway, anise, mint, garlic and eucalyptus.

When it comes to commercially produced milk, steamed whole cow's milk came in first place in our test. All five tasters rated it high in many categories, describing it as "beautiful" and "creamy." The organic milk ranked next with most tasters saying it had an appetizing color and tolerable smell. The 2% lactose-free cow's milk had a mild flavor and was very similar to the skim milk, although one taster said it tasted like a Hershey's Cookies 'n Cream bar. Finally, the oat milk was a bit more difficult to drink because of its tendency to separate into distinct layers with a thick head on top.
