What Do You See When You Meditate?

June 8, 2024

As you continue to practice meditation, your ability to focus will improve. This is why it is important to be patient with yourself as you learn to catch your mind wandering and gently bring it back to the focus of your attention. Just like any muscle, your ability to refocus will get stronger and more resilient the more you do it.

In some cases, meditators experience visions and sensations during deep meditation. This may be a sign of progress, or it may have a deeper meaning that is specific to the meditation path they follow. Some common visions include colors and lights that can appear in various forms including geometric grids, fractal patterns and mandalas. Other meditators see images of water, forests and lakes and feel that these visions purify their being. Some meditators will also see a progression of faces that appear one after another or morph into each other and this can also be associated with feelings of bliss and healing.

Occasionally, some meditators will see visions that appear to be dramas unfolding in their minds similar to dreams. For example, they might see a lake of calm water or peaceful landscapes, or they might see war-ravaged cities, dancing demons or other troubling images. This is similar to the way you might dream and is your mind ventilating these experiences to make you conscious of what’s going on inside your subconscious.

If the visions are a little scary, take note of them but don’t stop your meditation to do this. It is more effective to meet them with the meditative attitude of nonjudgmental observation and let them come and go as they please.
