This day is recognized by the National Medal of Honor Day which helps foster appreciation for the brave men and women that have received the nation’s highest military award. It’s important to remember that these individuals risked their lives and put themselves at risk in order to save the lives of others.
In 567 AD the Council of Tours abolished Janus as the beginning of the year and replaced it with March 25. The reason is fairly simple; they felt that it was much more appropriate to start the new year based on a religious event than a pagan event. The Christian church feels that it is very significant that their god came down to walk amongst humanity and that the conception of the son of their god on earth seemed like a very appropriate event for the beginning of the year.
The date of March 25 also coincides with the Christian Feast of the Annunciation which is a celebration of when the angel Gabriel told Mary that she would be the mother of Jesus Christ. The Christian church believes that this event is significant because it shows how Mary freely accepted the role of being the mother of the son of God which is a symbol of how we should all accept the sacrifices that God asks us to make for him.
