What Advantages Did the Spanish Have Over the Aztecs?

February 15, 2024

The Aztecs had a lot of advantages over the spanish, such as their superior weapons and tactics. But the biggest advantage that the spanish had was the diseases that killed a lot of the aztecs. This was a big help to the Spaniards in conquering and defeating the Aztec Empire. The Spanish also had horses which scared the aztecs a lot, and they had better armor.

Hernan Cortes was able to overcome the Aztecs and establish what is now Mexico City, or Tenochtitlan. The capital of the Aztec empire was located on an island in Lake Texcoco, in modern day Mexico. The Aztec empire was an alliance of city states, with the central government at Tenochtitlan controlling tributary lands and military affairs.

But the central government was weak, and its economy was in crisis. To make up for this weakness, the Aztecs waged war against the neighboring peoples to acquire captives for religious sacrifice and as workers for agricultural and infrastructure projects. The result was a vicious cycle of conquest and retribution, with the demand for higher tribute fueling revolts and the need for further retaliation.

When the Spaniards arrived in late summer 1519, the Aztecs were distracted by their crops and not prepared for a war. A series of natural phenomena and portents – a comet seen in the daytime, a column of fire that had appeared every midnight for a year, and two temples destroyed by lightning unaccompanied by thunder – seemed to augur disaster. Defeatism paralyzed the Aztec nation.
