Often referred to as the ‘land of a thousand waterfalls’, North Alabama is home to plenty of breathtaking spots to get your fill of nature and enjoy a dip in the crystal-clear waters. Here are a few of our favorite waterfalls to visit in the area.

Noccalula Falls

Noccalula Falls is a natural waterfall that relies on rainfall for its water flow. It is located within a 250-acre public park in Gadsden, Alabama.

Noccalula Falls has several features that make it a great family destination. Its main attraction is the 90-foot waterfall, but there are plenty of other activities and attractions that make it a perfect day trip or weekend getaway for families.

Besides the waterfall, Noccalula Falls Park also has various historical and natural sights to see like caves, an aboriginal fort, an abandoned dam, and a pioneer homestead. There are also trails that lead visitors through Black Creek Gorge past these sights.

DeSoto Falls

Located at DeSoto State Park, DeSoto Falls is one of the most scenic and beautiful waterfalls in Alabama. It plunges 104 feet into the West Fork of the Little River creating a beautiful canyon.

The park has a number of activities for visitors to enjoy including fishing, swimming, hiking and camping. The park also features an Olympic-size pool and a variety of accommodations that can be booked.

During fall, the DeSoto Falls area becomes the perfect place to enjoy North Alabama’s breathtaking fall colors. Mentone holds an annual Colorfest event in October that features arts and crafts, food, and live music.

Graces High Falls

Located within the Little River Canyon National Preserve, Graces High Falls is one of the state’s highest waterfalls. Though it is only seasonal, this 133-foot waterfall is definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Whether you want to relax, take in the beauty of nature or go swimming, the area has a lot to offer. The preserve is also home to several smaller waterfalls and creeks.

The parkway offers a number of overlooks along the 23-mile drive to enjoy scenic views across the canyon. It’s also a great place to stop for a picnic or snack break.

Salt Creek Falls

Located in Salt Creek Recreation Area, this incredibly picturesque waterfall is a popular place for locals to take in the beauty of nature and to dip their feet into its refreshing waters. During summertime, the falls are also popular for swimming!

Known for its breathtaking cascades, Salt Creek Falls is a stunning waterfall in Alabama. It can be seen from several observation decks and is a great place for photographers to capture stunning shots of its raging water.

Located in Talladega National Forest, Salt Creek Falls is the perfect place to spend a relaxing day with friends and family. It’s a short hike, under a mile from the parking lot, to reach the top of this impressive cascade and it’s also a great spot for swimming.

Devil’s Den Falls

Devil’s Den Falls is one of Alabama’s most popular natural attractions. It has a variety of features to offer including a swimming hole and rope swings.

There’s also a trail shelter available on a first-come, first-serve basis near the falls. Alternatively, visitors can camp at Devil’s Den State Park where there are a variety of Class AAA campsites with water/sewer/50 amp.

Another must-visit waterfall in Alabama is Cheaha Falls, located within Talladega National Forest. This three-tiered cascade is the perfect place to swim and is just a short hike from Devil’s Den.
