Is It A Sin To Meditate?

June 8, 2024

Despite the fact that meditation is often associated with Buddhism, Hinduism and other Eastern religions, it is not considered a sin in Christianity. As long as one is not trying to empty their mind completely, meditation can be a great way for Christians to lower stress levels and feel closer to God.

The Bible mentions meditating on many things, such as the words of Scripture (Joshua 1:8; Psalm 119:15) and on the Lord’s unfailing love for His children (Psalm 77:12). Unlike Eastern forms of meditation, which are often focused on emptiness of the mind, biblical meditation involves focusing on specific Scripture passages, and the Lord’s Word, to help us better understand it.

However, it is important to remember that, if someone meditates on the wrong things, then they can actually end up falling into sin. Likewise, if someone meditates on the wrong parts of Scripture, they can find themselves lost and not even realize it!

It is also important to consider the dangers of the world outside of our meditation, and that it would be easy for anyone to get hurt or even killed while they are distracted. For this reason, it is a good idea to practice meditating in a safe place, where there are people around in case you should suddenly be taken out of your meditative state. This way, you will be able to call for help. As you meditate on Scripture, remember that it is always good to pray alongside of it and to ask The Lord to show you how you can apply what you are reading in your life.
