How to Know If You Meditate Correctly

June 8, 2024

When meditating, it is common to experience a feeling of heightened awareness. This is a natural part of the meditation process and it is a positive sign that you are on the right track.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that if you are able to stay focused on your breath and not get distracted by thoughts and feelings, then you are doing the meditation correctly. This is a good indication that you are able to train the mind, allowing it to be less reactive and more calm.

Another way to know if you meditate correctly is by noticing how still you are. It is very common to start off a meditation with the desire to shift in your seat, scratch an itch, or clear your throat frequently, but this is not a sign that you are not meditating correctly. Just focus on the sensation of being still for a few minutes and then return to your breathing.

In the next step, notice what thoughts and emotions arise. It is not unusual to have a wide variety of thoughts, such as memories and worries about the future. These are not a sign that you are doing the meditation incorrectly, but rather that your brain is very creative.

When you find yourself following a trail of thought, gently note it to yourself, and then return your attention to the breath. Repeat this process throughout your meditation. Over time, your thoughts will begin to become more symbolic and dreamlike.
