How to Clean Coils on a Dehumidifier

February 14, 2024

Dehumidifiers are a fantastic way to keep excess moisture out of your home, keeping mold and mildew from growing, and improving the overall air quality of your living space. However, dehumidifiers can get pretty dirty over time. As such, it is important to clean the coils on a regular basis. This article will cover how to do this.

The first thing you will need to do is unplug the unit and remove the filter. This is a good time to use a vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment to clean all of the corners and crevices of the dehumidifier, as well as the fan blades. You can then wash the filter in warm, soapy water and rinse it off, letting it completely dry before reinstalling it.

You should also clean the dehumidifier’s outer shell, which will likely collect a lot of grime over time. A dry microfiber cloth will do the trick, though if you want to get really thorough you can take it apart (consult the manual to find out how) and wipe everything down with hot, soapy water.

Now, you can start to clean the coils. This is where things can get a bit messy. If your dehumidifier is particularly dirty, you may want to use a brush to scrub away some of the dirt and grime. Alternatively, you can purchase special air-conditioning coil cleaners that you spray on to wet or dry coils and then rinse off. Fairy liquid solution in a spray bottle may even work just as well, although it will probably stink!
