How Much Do Surfboards Cost?

November 27, 2023

As with most things in life, the cost of surfing can vary depending on what you’re looking for and where you shop. Some people can get into the sport for a fraction of the price if they buy used surfboards and wetsuits from thrift stores or local shops. Other people may spend thousands of dollars on high-end, custom surfboards and accessories to become the ultimate shredders.

The most significant costs in surfing are the surfboards themselves, which can range from a couple hundred to over $1,200, depending on what type of surfboard you want and where you purchase it. The first reason surfboards are so costly is because it takes a lot of time to shape and glass them. Shapers and glassers are skilled laborers that deserve to be compensated for their efforts. Additionally, the materials that are used to create a surfboard also contribute to its cost.

For beginner surfers, a soft-top foam board is the most affordable option at around $200. The next step up is the poly or epoxy boards that are in the $500-$1000 range, which offer improved performance over a foam board and long-lasting durability.

Other necessary surfing equipment includes a wetsuit that can run from $150-$300, fins that are around $100-$150, and a good board bag that is designed to protect your surfboard on the go and from the sun. Lastly, you will need some wax to keep your surfboard gliding smoothly on the waves.
