How Much Do Dog Whelpers Make?

March 20, 2024

Generally speaking, raising a single litter of puppies is going to cost you about $23500 (assuming a C-Section does not take place). This includes the dam and sire fees, whelping bed or kuranda beds, supplies, early neurological stimulation, area training, desensitization to noise, surfaces, textures and touch, and puppy vaccinations.

It is also recommended that you get a whelping box. You can buy one designed for this purpose or you can make your own. It should be at least two times the length of the dam so that she has plenty of room to stretch out, and it should have a railing (sometimes called a pigrail or puppy rail) about three inches high along the periphery of the box to prevent the dam from crushing her puppies between her body and the walls or suffocating them by lying on them.

The whelping box should be well-ventilated. Puppies are unable to generate their own body heat until they are at least two weeks old, so it is important that the box maintain a temperature of 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Dams that are too hot may not be able to give birth and may produce less milk.

After the first puppies are born, the dam should be left alone to care for her new babies and bond with them. It is very important that she has the time and space to do this, and her surroundings should be kept quiet, calm and cosy. She should be fed a small amount of food, such as a cooked tinned meat or fish, every couple of hours to ensure she is getting enough calories to keep up her milk production and stay in good condition.
